Dame Imogen Cooper, celebrated for her virtuosity and lyricism, is regarded as one of the finest interpreters of classical and romantic repertoire. Reflecting on Beethoven’s last three sonatas, she describes how her perception of them has evolved over the years. Initially focusing on Op. 110 due to her awe of Op. 111, she now appreciates the sonatas as a connected journey, finding new joy and depth in Op. 109 and Op. 111. Cooper also notes a similar experience with Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, which she approached later in life with intention and joy. She now finds it impossible to perform the sonatas in isolation, as their profound journey from first to last sonata feels inseparable.

Imogen Cooper (b. 1949), is a distinguished English pianist known for her virtuosity and interpretations of Schubert and Schumann. Born in North London to musicologist Martin du Pré Cooper and artist Mary Stewart, she displayed exceptional talent from a young age. At 12, she was sent to Paris to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, where she won the Premier Prix de Piano at 17. Cooper’s early mentors included Arthur Rubinstein, Clifford Curzon, and Alfred Brendel. Renowned for her performances in both solo and chamber music, she has also premiered modern works by composers like Thomas Adès. In recognition of her contributions to music, she was appointed CBE in 2007 and DBE in 2021. She was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music in 2019 and announced her retirement following a farewell tour in 2026.
