Alena Baeva and Vadym Kholodenko launch their recording of the complete violin sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven, bringing to the project over a decade of close artistic collaboration. Internationally acclaimed for her versatility and stage presence, Baeva partners with Kholodenko, whose career rose rapidly after winning the 2013 Van Cliburn Competition. This first installment features Sonatas Op. 12 No. 3, Op. 24 “Spring,” and Op. 47 “Kreutzer,” composed between 1797 and 1803, a formative period marked by Beethoven’s growing fame and emerging deafness. Their interpretation draws on the 2020 Bärenreiter edition and extensive research into period phrasing, ornamentation, and tempi.
Born in 1985 in Kyrgyzstan, Alena Baeva began studying violin at five and trained with Olga Danilova and Eduard Grach, later receiving guidance from Mstislav Rostropovich, Boris Garlitsky, and Shlomo Mintz. Now a Luxembourg citizen, she is internationally acclaimed for her versatility, combining core repertoire with advocacy for lesser-known composers. Baeva performs with leading orchestras worldwide and collaborates with distinguished conductors and chamber partners, notably pianist Vadym Kholodenko. Recording exclusively for Alpha Classics, her discography has earned critical praise. She performs on the 1738 “ex-William Kroll” Guarneri del Gesù, generously loaned by an anonymous patron.
Born in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1986, Vadym Kholodenko began piano studies at six and was touring internationally by thirteen. Educated at the Kyiv Lysenko State Music Lyceum and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, he studied with Natalia Gridneva, Borys Fedorov, and Vera Gornostaeva. After winning major prizes in Sendai (2010) and at the Schubert Competition (2011), he gained international prominence with the Gold Medal at the 2013 Van Cliburn Competition. Now based in Luxembourg, Kholodenko performs with leading orchestras worldwide and appears regularly in major recital halls. His wide-ranging repertoire and acclaimed discography confirm his reputation as one of the most distinguished pianists of his generation.
