This release centres on Paul Hindemith’s operatic adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1819 novella Das Fräulein von Scuderi, often regarded as one of the earliest German crime stories. Set in Paris under Louis XIV, the narrative blends fear, murder, and investigation with Romantic preoccupations with genius, obsession, and moral darkness. Hindemith composed the work in 1925 to a libretto by Ferdinand Lion, drawing on the ideals of the New Objectivity movement while consciously reworking historical forms in a neo-Baroque style. The recording captures the Vienna State Opera’s critically acclaimed, star-studded performance in a compelling live premiere.
Cornelius Meister (born 1980) is an internationally acclaimed conductor and pianist, serving as General Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Staatsorchester Stuttgart since 2018. Widely honoured for his interpretations, his awards include the Gramophone Award, OPUS Klassik Conductor of the Year, and Diapason d’Or. Meister has conducted leading orchestras worldwide and appears regularly at major opera houses including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, and the Metropolitan Opera. His acclaimed Bayreuth debut further cemented his international reputation.
