With Missa Iste Confessor Domini, the Musurgia Ensemble explores 16th-century sacred music drawn from the Santa Cruz monastery manuscripts in Coimbra, centering on the mass preserved in the choir book P-Cug MM 2, likely produced in ’s-Hertogenbosch shortly after 1530 and containing works by leading Franco-Flemish composers including Noël Bauldeweyn, Pierre de La Rue, Jean Mouton, Pierre Moulu, and Adrian Willaert. The mass’s disputed attribution—elsewhere linked to Antoine de Févin but credited in Coimbra to de La Rue—underscores the manuscript’s authority, particularly in its precise canon instructions. Complemented by instrumental works from related Coimbra sources, the program highlights both international polyphony and local traditions, realized through historically informed performance and scholarly research.

Founded in 2020 by João Francisco Távora and Helder Sousa, Musurgia Ensemble is a flexible early music group dedicated to performing 16th- to 18th-century instrumental repertoire, with a particular focus on recovering and promoting Portuguese musical heritage through projects that combine artistic performance and musicological research. This mission underpins initiatives such as “Solfa tangida, Solfa cantada” (2023–2024), developed in collaboration with the University of Coimbra’s Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies and the Quarto Tom Ensemble. The group is also active in staged productions, including Rameau’s Daphnis et Eglé (2023) and an upcoming production of Francisco Manuel de Melo’s Auto do Fidalgo Aprendiz. Regular festival appearances and new recording projects further reflect its dynamic artistic profile.
