Yuri Fayer (1890–1971) was a distinguished Soviet conductor and chief ballet conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre from 1923 to 1963. Born in Kiev, he began as a violin prodigy, later studying at the Moscow Conservatory while building practical experience in opera and orchestral performance. At the Bolshoi, he became a central figure in Soviet ballet, conducting major premieres including Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, and The Tale of the Stone Flower, as well as Asafyev’s The Flames of Paris. Closely collaborating with leading composers and choreographers, Fayer shaped the Bolshoi’s repertoire for four decades, remaining active even after losing much of his sight.
