Rachmaninov’s 10 Preludes, Op. 23, composed in the wake of his recovery from a profound creative crisis, belong to a renewed and confident phase of his early career. Following the failure of his First Symphony and subsequent depression, therapy helped restore his compositional voice, leading first to the Second Piano Concerto and then these preludes, published in 1904. Influenced by Chopin yet broader and more complex in structure, they combine Russian intensity with lyricism, nostalgia, and grandeur. Together with Opp. 3 and 32, they complete Rachmaninov’s 24 preludes, extending the expressive possibilities of the modern piano.

Vitantonio Caroli (born 1982, Bari) is an Italian pianist with an extensive academic background, graduating with highest honors in piano and solo performance, alongside diplomas in chamber music, vocal chamber music, electronic music, and music pedagogy. He has refined his training with leading international artists and performs widely in Italy and across Europe, both as soloist and with orchestras. A prizewinner at numerous national and international competitions, Caroli is known for his focus on demanding and lesser-explored repertoire, including Beethoven, Szymanowski, Casella, and Respighi. He is also active in contemporary music and recording projects.
