In the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, the Notre-Dame School in Paris established the foundations of European polyphony. Through composers such as Léonin and Pérotin, vocal music evolved beyond plainchant into a remarkably complex and innovative polyphonic style. This groundbreaking development marked a decisive milestone in music history, uniting spiritual intensity with structural discipline inspired by Gothic architecture. The resulting repertoire represents an unprecedented creative achievement of the medieval period. With scholarly rigor and expressive power, the Huelgas Ensemble revives this repertoire, revealing both its historical significance and its enduring artistic vitality.

For more than fifty years, the Huelgas Ensemble has been internationally acclaimed for its performances of medieval and Renaissance polyphonic music. Renowned for innovative programming, exceptional pitch precision, and historically informed interpretation, the ensemble is praised for its clarity, vitality, and deep understanding of early vocal practices. Under the direction of Paul Van Nevel, it performs worldwide in leading concert halls, historic sacred spaces, and major festivals, forging a strong link between music and architecture. Its extensive discography of over 120 recordings and numerous prestigious awards reflect its lasting influence and its role in setting new artistic standards, while also inspiring collaborations with contemporary composers.
