With her new album, Sol Gabetta honors Lise Cristiani (1825–1853), the first professional female cellist to perform publicly, celebrating the 200th anniversary of her birth in December 2025. Released by Sony Classical on October 10, the recording pays tribute to Cristiani’s groundbreaking role in challenging social norms and inspiring 19th-century composers. In collaboration with musicologists, Gabetta has reconstructed Cristiani’s repertoire, uncovering works by virtuoso cellists from her circle. The album offers a vivid exploration of Romantic-era expressiveness and virtuosity, illuminating the artistry and legacy of a pioneering musician who helped redefine the role of women in classical performance.
Born in Córdoba, Argentina, in 1981 to French and Russian parents, cellist Sol Gabetta gained early recognition, winning her first competition at age ten and later the Moscow Tchaikovsky and ARD Munich Competitions. Her international breakthrough came in 2004 with her debut alongside the Vienna Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev at the Lucerne Festival. Trained in Madrid, Basel, and Berlin, she has since performed with leading orchestras worldwide and at major festivals, while founding her own Solsberg Chamber Music Festival in Switzerland. An exclusive RCA/Sony artist, her award-winning recordings include works by Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, and Elgar. She performs on a 1759 Guadagnini cello and teaches at the Basel Academy of Music.
