Released to mark his 50th birthday, Renaud Capuçon’s new album presents his deeply personal interpretations of J. S. Bach’s sonatas and partitas for solo violin. Capuçon first encountered these works in childhood through his parents’ record collection, an experience that sparked a lifelong devotion to Bach’s music. Long regarded as cornerstones of the violin repertoire, the six works are here shaped by decades of performance and reflection. Capuçon describes the recording process as one of humility and inner calm, emphasizing Bach’s music as a lasting source of comfort, joy, and spiritual renewal, and framing the album as both an artistic milestone and a moment of profound self-examination.
Born in Chambéry in 1976, Renaud Capuçon is one of today’s leading French violinists. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris and further mentored by Thomas Brandis and Isaac Stern, he achieved early international recognition through major prizes and awards. His career was significantly shaped by Claudio Abbado, with whom he served as concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. Capuçon has appeared with the world’s foremost orchestras, conductors, and chamber musicians, and performs regularly at major international festivals. His extensive, award-winning discography reflects a broad repertoire. He plays the 1737 Guarneri del Gesù “Panette,” formerly owned by Isaac Stern.
