con slancio presents an inspired duo performance by Heinz Holliger and Marie-Lise Schüpbach, praised for its exceptional fluency and expressive energy. The album features premiere recordings of six compositions by Holliger written between 2018 and 2020, including the title work dedicated to Schüpbach, reflecting their unique instrumental dialogue. It also includes contrasting works written for Holliger by fellow composers, ranging from Jürg Wyttenbach and Jacques Wildberger to György Kurtág and Toshio Hosokawa. Recorded at Zurich’s DRS Studio, the release continues ECM New Series’ long-standing documentation of Holliger’s music and is accompanied by an in-depth bilingual interview.
Heinz Holliger, born in 1939 in Langenthal, Switzerland, is an internationally renowned oboist, composer, and conductor. Trained in composition by Sándor Veress and Pierre Boulez, he has inspired numerous leading composers to write works for him while also championing neglected repertoire, notably music by Jan Zelenka. Holliger’s own compositions, extensively recorded by ECM, reflect a sustained exploration of the limits of sound and language, often informed by literary and biographical research. His opera Schneewittchen, premiered in 1998, received wide acclaim and won a GRAMMY Award in 2002, confirming his stature as a major creative voice.
Marie-Lise Schüpbach, born in Zurich, studied oboe with Heinz Holliger in Freiburg im Breisgau, graduating with honors. She began her orchestral career with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra and subsequently served as solo English horn of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich from 1979 to 2017. Closely connected to Switzerland, she was a long-standing member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. An active chamber musician, Schüpbach frequently performs with Heinz Holliger and Andrea Bischoff, has toured with the Swiss Chamber Soloists, and co-founded the chamber music festival erstKlassik am Sarnersee in 2008.
