Following his acclaimed Dowland album A Fancy, Bor Zuljan returns to the Renaissance master in an imaginative programme that juxtaposes works by John Dowland and his contemporaries with music by William Walton, Peter Warlock, Thelonious Monk, and Pink Floyd. Framed as a dreamlike nocturnal journey, the recording imagines Dowland seeking solace in his orpharion, guided by mythic figures through shifting, avant-garde soundscapes. Performed on copies of a 1617 nine-course orpharion and a specially developed electric ten-course instrument, and featuring soprano Clara Brunet, the album blends solo and vocal works while marking the 400th anniversary of Dowland’s death.

Bor Zuljan (born 1987) is a versatile musician active across early, modern, and traditional plucked-string genres, acclaimed as a “Revolutionary of the lute” (Le Soir). Specializing in Renaissance repertoire, he explores rediscovered improvisational techniques, instruments, and sound worlds. He performs as a soloist and with leading ensembles including Vox Luminis and Il Giardino Armonico, and directs the Slovenian early music festival Flores Musicae. His recordings—most notably Dowland: A Fancy—have received major international awards. Zuljan studied in Ljubljana, Koblenz, and Geneva, where he now researches 16th-century lute improvisation, teaches lute, and presents lectures and masterclasses internationally.
