The Portland Percussion Group’s latest release showcases three commissioned works: Alejandro Viñao’s title composition, Mendel Lee’s The Spaces Between, and Daniel Webbon’s Whatever was lost never thenceforth mattered. Together, these pieces highlight the ensemble’s remarkable versatility, moving seamlessly from metrically complex, virtuosic interplay to spacious, nuanced textures and ultimately to powerful, cathartic drumming. Beyond demonstrating technical and expressive range, the recording underscores the vibrant diversity of contemporary percussion ensemble repertoire. Once defined by a handful of pioneering groups, the field has evolved into a prolific and innovative sub-community within concert music. With this dynamic and insightful performance, the Portland Percussion Group affirms its influential role in this thriving artistic landscape.

The Portland Percussion Group, based in Portland, was founded in 2011 to invigorate contemporary music in the Pacific Northwest and has since become a vital presence in the region’s new music community. Expanding from a quartet to an eight-member collective in 2021, the ensemble has commissioned over 60 new works and continues to explore innovative sounds and performance contexts. Recent appearances include the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, GAIDA Festival, nienteForte Contemporary Music Festival, Northwest Percussion Festival, Makrokosmos Project, National Association of Composers, New Music Gathering, collaborations with Resonance Ensemble and DUO Stephanie and Saar, and ongoing work with the Portland Summer Percussion Academy, alongside extensive educational outreach nationwide.
