Following her acclaimed solo debut, Swiss-American bassoonist Céleste-Marie Roy presents a new album devoted to original 20th- and 21st-century works that showcase the full expressive and technical range of her instrument. The program reflects an intimate understanding of the bassoon’s distinctive character, from Klaus Thunemann’s virtuosic variations on Paganini—ranging from dark lyricism to dazzling brilliance—to Charles Koechlin’s modal Monodies and Mathieu Lussier’s spirited Fantasy Tango. Malcolm Arnold’s contribution highlights the instrument’s vocal warmth and accessible charm. Across this generously filled recording, Roy demonstrates remarkable agility, tonal richness, and interpretative depth, revealing both the bassoon’s humor and its profound expressive capacity.
Céleste-Marie Roy, raised in Maine, began her musical studies on several woodwinds before choosing the bassoon at age 13. She trained at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division and later at The Juilliard School under Stephan Maxym, earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. At 20, she made her solo debut with the New York String Orchestra under Alexander Schneider at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, subsequently appearing with leading New York ensembles. Roy has performed internationally, including at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival under Leonard Bernstein, and studied in Salzburg and Hanover, completing the prestigious Konzertexam with Klaus Thunemann. She has served as principal bassoonist of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande since 1997 and remains active as a soloist and chamber musician.
