Formed in 2018 by four students at London’s Royal Academy of Music—soprano Mariamielle Lamagat, baroque violinist Louise Ayrton, harpsichordist Lucie Chabard, and viol player Alice Trocellier—Ensemble Théodora is devoted to French Baroque repertoire and its broader European influence. For its debut recording in Alpha Classics’ “Baroque Stories” series, the ensemble explores the impact of the French style in 18th-century Germanic lands, where composers embraced the dance forms, dotted rhythms, and harmonic language of Louis XIV’s court. The program highlights works by Johann Fischer and Johann Philipp Krieger, alongside music by Bach, reflecting the cross-cultural exchange that shaped the era’s evolving instrumental and vocal practices.

Théodora is an early music ensemble dedicated to late 17th- and early 18th-century repertoire, with particular emphasis on expatriate composers. Founded in 2018, the group quickly gained recognition through major early music competitions and festival appearances across Europe. While French music remains central to its identity, the ensemble also explores English repertoire, fostering improvisational practice. In 2021, Théodora launched a theatrical project centered on Abbé de Choisy, now touring, and developed community outreach initiatives introducing Baroque music to new audiences. Recent highlights include the premiere of Genesis in 2023 and an upcoming residency at the 2024 La Chaise-Dieu Festival, alongside its appointment as Junior Artists in Residence at the Singer-Polignac Foundation.
