Ken Ara (1939–2020), also known as Kenichi Ara, was a distinguished Japanese classical pianist whose career achieved significant international recognition. Following his Tokyo debut in 1963, he pursued advanced studies at the Berlin University of the Arts. His acclaimed German debut in 1966 with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra led to performances with the Berlin Philharmonic and other major European ensembles. Ara also appeared with leading Japanese orchestras, including the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Osaka Philharmonic, and performed worldwide. A dedicated chamber musician, he founded the Berlin Philharmonic Piano Trio and later taught at Kyoto City University of Arts and Osaka University of Arts. His Mozart recordings appear in DG’s debut series.
