_____________________
Daníel Bjarnason is a central yet distinctive figure among contemporary Icelandic composers often associated with a “First Icelandic School.” While he has helped promote peers such as Anna Thorvaldsdottir and María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir through premieres and recordings, his own music extends beyond the group’s typical aesthetic, incorporating forms like opera. Unlike the gradual, atmospheric transformations common in Icelandic orchestral writing, Bjarnason often builds works around clearly defined musical ideas that undergo distortion before reappearing. His compositions combine slow, archetypal soundscapes with varied tempos, strong rhythms, and multiple simultaneous time scales. Works on The Grotesque & The Sublime, rooted in earlier concertos, highlight his thematic development, sonic exploration, and strong narrative sense.
Daníel Bjarnason (born 26 February 1979) is an Icelandic composer and conductor recognized as one of the country’s leading musical figures. He is currently Artist in Association with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, after serving as Artist in Residence and later Principal Guest Conductor. His works have been performed and conducted by major orchestras worldwide, and he has collaborated with artists across classical and contemporary music, including Sigur Rós and Brian Eno. Recent projects include the song cycle Hands on Me, the orchestral trilogy I Want To Be Alive, and the opera Brothers. Bjarnason has also written several concertos and film scores, recording for prominent labels and receiving numerous awards and a Grammy nomination.
