This recording features Ino, a dramatic cantata by Georg Philipp Telemann, performed by Florilegium under the direction of Ashley Solomon with soprano Elizabeth Watts, violinist Rachel Podger, and recorder player Hannah Parry. Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Ino unfolds as a highly theatrical work in which a single soprano voice narrates the entire story. The album also includes two double concertos that highlight Telemann’s imaginative use of instrumental color and texture. Demonstrating his inventive approach to the concerto form, the flute and violin concerto adopts an unusual five-movement structure, while the recorder and flute concerto exemplifies his fascination with distinctive instrumental pairings and remains one of his most popular orchestral works.

Rachel Podger (b. 1968) is a renowned Baroque and Classical violinist, celebrated for her artistry and leadership in early music. She is the founder and Artistic Director of Brecon Baroque and its festival, and Principal Guest Director of Tafelmusik. Recognized with major accolades—including the Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Prize and BBC Music Magazine’s Recording of the Year 2023—she is also a passionate educator, holding key teaching positions in the UK and working with Juilliard. Her acclaimed recordings, including Tutta Sola and Just Biber, highlight her creative programming and ongoing global influence in early music.

Florilegium is one of Britain’s leading period-instrument ensembles, known for vibrant and historically informed performances that combine scholarly research with expressive musicianship. Founded in 1991, the group performs a wide repertoire ranging from chamber music to large orchestral and choral works, often collaborating with distinguished soloists and choirs. Florilegium has appeared at major international venues including the Sydney Opera House, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Former Ensemble-in-Residence at London’s Wigmore Hall, the group now works with students as Ensemble in Association at the Royal College of Music. Their extensive discography has received numerous awards and nominations, with recordings of Bach, Telemann, and others widely praised by critics.
