This album presents a live recording of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 performed by the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra under the direction of Sir Donald Runnicles. Composed in 1901–1902 while Mahler was recovering from a serious illness, the symphony premiered in Cologne in 1904 and remains one of his most celebrated works, particularly its famous fourth movement. Recorded in the acoustically renowned Walk Festival Hall, the performance brings together the festival’s distinguished orchestra, which each summer gathers more than 250 musicians from leading orchestras and universities across North America and Europe. The Grand Teton Music Festival has been widely recognized as one of the leading music festivals in the United States.
Donald Runnicles (born 16 November 1954) is a Scottish conductor with an extensive international career in both symphonic and operatic music. He serves as Music Director of the Grand Teton Music Festival and General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, while also appearing as Principal Guest Conductor with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in his final season in that role. Runnicles has previously held major positions including Music Director of the San Francisco Opera and leadership roles in Freiburg and with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. He is particularly respected for his interpretations of major operatic repertoire, and his recordings include works by Wagner, Mozart, Orff, Britten, and Humperdinck.
