Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich continue their Mahler symphony cycle with Symphony No. 7, one of the composer’s most complex and enigmatic works. Often called the “Song of the Night,” the symphony reveals a darker and more philosophical side of Mahler, as noted by Järvi. Mahler composed the work during the summers of 1904 and 1905 on the shores of Lake Wörthersee while serving as director of the Vienna Opera. The symphony is notable for its rich and unusual orchestration, including the use of guitar and mandolin in the fourth movement, as well as striking orchestral colors and effects. Its opening tenor horn solo, which Mahler associated with the roaring of nature, sets the tone for the work’s atmospheric and dramatic character.

Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi (b. 1962) is one of today’s leading maestros, renowned for his dynamic artistry and deep musical insight. He is Music Director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and founder of the Estonian Festival Orchestra. Järvi continues his Mahler symphony cycle with the Tonhalle-Orchester during the 2024/25 season, following acclaimed recordings of Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Messiaen, and John Adams. A frequent guest with top orchestras worldwide, he also leads the Pärnu Music Festival in Estonia. His numerous honors include a Grammy Award, the Sibelius Medal, and the 2022 European Cultural Prize.
