Johann Sebastian Bach composed six harpsichord concertos and compiled them around 1738, many of which are believed to be arrangements of earlier works, often originally written for violin. In this recording project, Sigiswald Kuijken combines these six concertos with three double concertos for two harpsichords, as well as the two violin concertos and the double concerto for two violins that Bach later adapted for harpsichord. These twelve works are released across a series of three CDs, with the second volume now available. Harpsichordists Mario Sarrechia and Hsiu-Tzu Ryanas perform several solo parts, while Kuijken himself appears as violin soloist. The orchestral parts are performed one per part, reflecting Kuijken’s historically informed interpretation of Bach’s practice.

La Petite Bande, a Belgian early music ensemble, was founded in 1972 by Sigiswald Kuijken at the request of the German label Harmonia Mundi to record Lully’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme under the direction of Gustav Leonhardt. Named after Lully’s orchestra at the court of Louis XIV, the group brings together internationally recognized specialists in historically informed performance. Although initially intended as a temporary project, its success led to regular concert activity and an expanding repertoire that now includes works by Bach, Handel, Gluck, Haydn, and Mozart. The ensemble has recorded extensively, including an 18-CD series of Bach cantatas, and has performed at major festivals worldwide. From 1997 to 2018, it was in residence in Leuven.
