The fifth album in the Berliner Philharmoniker’s soloists series features Bruno Delepelaire, First Principal Cellist, performing Joseph Haydn’s Second Cello Concerto in D major under Michael Sanderling and Édouard Lalo’s rarely heard Cello Concerto in D minor with Tugan Sokhiev. Delepelaire highlights Haydn’s work as a milestone of the cello repertoire, noting its cantabile themes and conversational lines that evoke an operatic experience. Lalo’s concerto is praised for its romantic richness, combining virtuosic brilliance with expressive depth, making the recording a compelling exploration of both classical and romantic cello literature.

Bruno Delepelaire, Paris-born principal cellist of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2013, is acclaimed for bringing “clarity and fire” to the cello repertoire. Trained in Paris and Berlin, he first performed with the orchestra as a member of the Karajan Akademie, an experience he describes as transformative. Delepelaire has since appeared as soloist in works ranging from Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 to John Williams’ Elegy for Cello and Orchestra, and performs widely as a chamber musician with the Quatuor Cavatine, the Berlin Piano Quartet, and the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic. He plays a Matteo Goffriller cello, generously provided by the Karolina Blaberg Foundation.
