In 1800, Haydn’s oratorio La Création du Monde captivated French audiences, prompting the Paris Opera to stage a French adaptation just two years after its Vienna premiere. The historic first performance on December 24, 1800, was marked by the dramatic presence of Bonaparte, First Consul, who narrowly escaped an explosion that claimed 40 lives. This French version has now been revived by Julien Chauvin, who discovered the original piano-vocal edition, and performed with Le Concert de la Loge, the Choeur de Chambre de Namur, and leading soloists Julie Roset, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, and Nahuel Di Pierro. Chauvin emphasizes Haydn’s orchestral brilliance, which vividly colors and personifies the text in this newly recorded edition.

Julien Chauvin, born in 1979 in Fontainebleau, was inspired early by Baroque music and historically informed performance, leading him to study at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. In 2015, he founded Le Concert de la Loge and also performs with the Quatuor Cambini-Paris, established in 2007. He has prepared and conducted operas by Lemoyne, Isouard, Haydn, Mozart, and Sacchini, and guest-conducted ensembles including the Esterházy Hofkapelle, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, and Les Violons du Roy. Chauvin’s acclaimed recordings of Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Berlioz have earned awards such as Diapason d’or, Choc de Classica, and recognition from Gramophone.
