Cut Circle has released the second installment of its Complete Josquin cycle, recorded in summer 2024 at Futura Productions. The album presents historically informed performances of early sacred works by Josquin des Prez, highlighting the composer’s emerging musical voice in his early thirties. The interpretations emphasize rhythmic vitality, expressive melodies, and finely balanced vocal interplay, particularly in intimate duets that evoke a conversational exchange between voices. Josquin’s writing combines structural finesse with emotional depth, contrasting moments of intimacy with radiant sonorities. Even within a sacred context, the music conveys a sensual, human quality characteristic of the artistic spirit of his time.

Cut Circle is a vocal ensemble dedicated to bringing Renaissance music to life through historically informed performance and rigorous scholarship. Founded in 2003 by director Jesse Rodin, the group focuses on composers of the long fifteenth century, including Guillaume Du Fay, Johannes Okeghem, and Josquin des Prez. Known for performances described as masterful and passionate, Cut Circle combines flexible vocal technique with meticulous attention to polyphonic detail. As a nonprofit organization, it produces recordings, concerts, lectures, workshops, and masterclasses, performing internationally across the United States and Europe. The ensemble has received several honors, including the Noah Greenberg Award and a Diapason d’Or, and records for the Belgian label Musique en Wallonie.
