This album presents three piano works from Beethoven’s middle period: the “Tempest” Sonata, Sonata Op. 54, and Andante Favori, composed between 1801 and 1804. These pieces exemplify Beethoven’s compositional approach, particularly his development of concise motifs through transformation and expansion to shape coherent musical narratives, alongside his exploration of intervallic relationships. Although not strictly programmatic, the works evoke vivid atmospheres and emotional depth. They also illustrate Beethoven’s gradual departure from the formal constraints of early Haydn-influenced sonata structures, marking a significant evolution toward a more mature, individual style that ultimately redefined and elevated the sonata form.

Pianist Kyuho Han received his early musical training at Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School before being admitted with honors to the Korea National University of Arts. He later pursued advanced studies in Germany, earning his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Konzertexamen degrees from music universities in Munich, Frankfurt, and Münster. Han has achieved recognition in several prestigious international competitions, including the Prague Spring, Sendai, and Seoul International Competitions. Currently an artist with the Fantasia label, he maintains an active performance career, appearing regularly in concerts across Europe and Korea.
