Composer Mark Edwards Wilson has built a distinguished career marked by numerous awards, major commissions, and collaborations with leading ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra. A central element of his work is his commitment to keeping symphonic music vibrant and relevant, as demonstrated in the album Dangerous Journeys. The compositions—Meteora, The Phoenix, and the title piece—feature cinematic qualities, including dramatic orchestration, vivid imagery, soaring melodies, and dynamic use of strings, brass, harp, and celesta. The title work presents a powerful musical narrative of perilous expeditions and is dedicated to the people of Ukraine and their resilience. The London Symphony Orchestra delivers a precise and compelling performance.
Mark Edwards Wilson, a composer and faculty member at the University of Maryland, began his career in California and earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles at age 25, studying with Henri Lazarof and Leon Kirchner. His electro-acoustic pieces Aeolus and Sappho have received widespread performances, with the latter premiered by soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson. His compositions have also been widely recorded and recognized with numerous honors.
