Nico Muhly and The Tallis Scholars present No Resting Place, an album of world premiere recordings of works composed for the ensemble over the past decade at the invitation of director Peter Phillips. The collection showcases Muhly’s sensitivity to the group’s distinctive sound through pieces that blend sacred texts, historical reflection, and contemporary perspectives. The title work, No Resting Place, sets Jeremiah’s Lamentations alongside interviews with Windrush generation members, while Recordare, Domine and Marrow draw on biblical texts. Rough Notes evokes Captain Scott’s Antarctic diary with austere textures, and celebratory pieces include Prosperitie and A Glorious Creature, highlighting both introspection and the human spirit.
Nico Muhly (b. 1981, USA) is a versatile composer whose work spans orchestral, choral, chamber, operatic, and media music. He has received commissions from major institutions including the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and the Berlin, Los Angeles, and New York Philharmonics, while his choral compositions have been performed by ensembles such as The Tallis Scholars, Chanticleer, and the choirs of Westminster Abbey and Cambridge colleges, where he serves as composer-in-residence. Muhly’s collaborations extend to choreographers, visual artists, and popular musicians, and he has composed scores for film and television, including The Reader, Kill Your Darlings, and Pachinko. His works are widely recorded, and he co-founded the label Bedroom Community, reflecting a broad engagement with contemporary music and interdisciplinary projects.
The Tallis Scholars, founded in 1973 by Peter Phillips, are internationally recognized for their interpretations of Renaissance sacred music, celebrated for the purity and clarity of their sound. Over five decades, they have performed nearly 2,750 concerts worldwide and earned numerous awards for their recordings, including the BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Year and the Gramophone Early Music Award. Their landmark project to record all of Josquin’s masses was completed in 2020, and recent releases have included works by Robert Fayrfax and, in 2026, a collaboration with Nico Muhly on Linn Records. The ensemble continues to tour globally, maintaining a prominent presence in early music performance.
