The album explores humanity’s enduring fascination with chaos—feared as disorder yet revered as a source of creation and artistic brilliance. Bringing together works that evoke turbulence and unpredictability, the program presents arrangements for string quartet of pieces originally written for diverse instruments, interconnected by improvised interludes based on material by Hungarian composer Samu Gryllus. The Chaos String Quartet was formed following a chance meeting at a masterclass in Prussia Cove, when its members embraced the adventurous spirit inherent in quartet playing. Now BBC New Generation Artists (2023–2025), they perform at leading venues including Wigmore Hall, the Musikverein, and the Concertgebouw, embodying the idea that from chaos can arise striking musical clarity and beauty.
Founded in 2019, the Chaos String Quartet draws inspiration from the principles of chaos in art, science, and philosophy. The ensemble has quickly established an international reputation, winning major competitions including ARD (2022), Bordeaux (2022), Bad Tölz (2023), and Haydn (2023), alongside further distinctions at the Bartók World Competition and the Premio VE Rimbotti. They have performed at leading venues such as the Musikverein Wien, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Philharmonie de Paris, and appear regularly at prominent festivals across Europe and beyond. Graduates of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, the quartet combines artistic excellence with initiatives aimed at broadening access to the string quartet repertoire.
