For his third solo album with Alpha Classics, keyboardist Anthony Romaniuk returns to the piano to explore the expressive possibilities of the seven musical modes, scales rooted in ancient Greek music that continue to influence folk, jazz, and contemporary styles. Beginning with John Adams’s Phrygian Gates, the program brings together works by composers and artists such as Arvo Pärt, György Ligeti, Radiohead, and Björk, alongside Romaniuk’s own compositions, arrangements of traditional Catalan and British music, and improvisations. Seeking a distinctive sonic identity, he performs on two pianos, including a vertical concert grand by David Klavins from Nils Frahm’s collection. Enhanced with analogue and digital effects and innovative recording techniques, the album creates an immersive, installation-like soundscape.

Keyboardist Anthony Romaniuk is known for his distinctive artistic voice shaped by an ongoing exploration of diverse musical styles. A versatile “musical polyglot,” he combines classical training with strong improvisational skills, enabling him to move fluidly across genres. Raised in Australia with a passion for jazz, he studied classical piano and contemporary music at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, later specializing in early keyboards in the Netherlands. His repertoire ranges from composers such as Byrd, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Brahms to Ligeti, Adams, and contemporary works. Romaniuk collaborates widely with leading artists and ensembles and performs at major international venues. His Alpha Classics recordings are noted for their innovative programming and timbral experimentation.
