Johannes Brahms played a crucial role in establishing Antonín Dvořák’s career by securing him a scholarship and assisting with proofreading his published scores. In turn, Dvořák helped composer Zdeněk Fibich gain some degree of recognition, though Fibich remained overshadowed by contemporaries such as Dvořák and Smetana. Unlike them, Fibich moved beyond folk-inspired melodies and regular structures, pursuing a more intense Romantic ideal focused on pure emotion and passion. His music therefore demands a highly flexible tempo, with subtle or dramatic changes in speed and phrasing, sometimes even departing from strict rhythmic beats. This recording aims to revive that authentic Romantic performance style, essential for fully appreciating Fibich’s expressive music.

Musica Florea is a Czech Baroque instrumental ensemble founded in 1992 by young musicians dedicated to the historically informed performance of early music on period instruments. Led by cellist and conductor Marek Štryncl, the group quickly gained recognition, notably with a 1995 performance of Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis at the Prague Spring Festival and an award-winning recording of the work. The ensemble has since performed at major festivals across Europe and collaborated with leading artists, including mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená. Musica Florea has produced numerous acclaimed recordings and projects, often focusing on Central European Baroque repertoire. Their performances combine historical research with vivid interpretation, contributing significantly to the revival and appreciation of Baroque music.
