Luigi Cherubini (1760–1842) was an Italian-born composer who became a central figure in French musical life during the transition from Classicism to Romanticism. Trained by Giuseppe Sarti, he initially composed sacred music before turning to opera, producing numerous Italian and French works. Settling in France in 1786, he later held influential posts at the Paris Conservatory and the royal chapel of Louis XVIII. Cherubini’s operas combined Classical structure with emerging Romantic themes, helping shape the evolution of French opera. Admired by composers such as Beethoven, he was also a distinguished composer of sacred music, particularly his celebrated requiems, which blend clarity, dignity, and spiritual grandeur.
