Johann Sebastian Bach’s appointment as Thomaskantor in 1723 was made possible by the intervention of the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, who refused to release his court conductor, Christoph Graupner, for the Leipzig post. By retaining Graupner through improved conditions, the Landgrave inadvertently cleared the way for Bach’s appointment. Graupner, a highly versatile and inventive composer, was known for his experimental orchestration and formal freedom. The episode highlights how circumstances shaped musical history, leaving open the question of whether Graupner would have thrived equally in Leipzig, while underscoring gratitude for the decision that ultimately favored Bach.
