The recording features works composed between 1825 and 1835, during Felix Mendelssohn’s formative years from ages sixteen to twenty-six, a period marked by extensive travel and growing professional recognition. His Piano Sonatas in E major and B-flat major, along with the Phantasie, reflect the influence of Beethoven and contemporaries such as Weber and Hummel, while the shorter Scherzo à capriccio and Capriccio reveal a more ազատ, expressive side. The programme concludes with Liszt’s virtuosic reworking of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Performed by acclaimed pianist Peter Donohoe, the recording highlights both Mendelssohn’s development and Donohoe’s exceptional artistry and versatility.

Peter Donohoe (b. 1953, Manchester) is acclaimed as one of today’s foremost pianists, admired for his versatility, musicianship, and commanding technique. Educated at Chetham’s, Leeds University, the Royal Northern College of Music, and in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod, he has performed worldwide with leading orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Berlin Philharmonic, and major UK ensembles. His repertoire spans from Mozart and Scriabin to contemporary composers like James MacMillan. Donohoe is also a sought-after competition juror, serving at events such as the Tchaikovsky and Queen Elisabeth Competitions. His extensive discography includes Mozart, Haydn, Grieg, Brahms, and Busoni.
