Composer: Giaches de Wert
- Or si rallegri il Cielo
- L'anima mia ferita
- Vago augelletto che cantando vai
- Valle che de' lamenti miei se' piena
- Quel rossignol, che sí soave piagne
- Ecco che un'altra volta, o piagge apriche
- Mia benigna fortuna e'l viver lieto
- Sovra un bel cristallino e puro rivo
- Un bacio solo à tante pene, hai, cruda?
- Di morte già sentìa il fero ultimo dardo
- Mesola, il Po da lato, e'l mar a fronte
- O come vaneggiate, Donna
- Ha Ninfe adorne, e belle
- Padre del ciel, dopo i perduti giorni

La Compagnia del Madrigale’s new recording focuses on Giaches de Wert’s Ninth Book of Madrigals (1588), a work composed during a period of personal turmoil. Wert, a Flemish-born composer active in Mantua, demonstrates enduring artistry, blending emotional depth with technical sophistication. The Ninth Book sets texts by Petrarch, Torquato Tasso, Jacopo Sannazaro, and Battista Guarini, juxtaposing courtly homage with expressive lyricism that anticipates Carlo Gesualdo’s style. La Compagnia del Madrigale, renowned for their interpretations of Monteverdi, Marenzio, Gesualdo, and Rore, delivers these madrigals with exceptional musicality, highlighting the work’s elegance, emotional intensity, and historical significance within the late Renaissance repertoire.
Giaches de Wert (c.1535–1596) was a Flemish composer celebrated for his madrigals and influential in the development of late Renaissance vocal music. Likely brought to Italy as a boy singer, he became associated with the Gonzaga court, serving from 1565 as maestro di cappella at Mantua’s ducal chapel of Santa Barbara until 1592. A prolific composer, de Wert produced both sacred and secular works, though most of his masses and hymns were published posthumously, while his motets and extensive madrigal output were widely admired in his lifetime. His innovative vocal writing notably influenced contemporaries, including Claudio Monteverdi, shaping the evolution of Italian madrigal style.
