Arvo Pärt’s four symphonies, composed over a 45-year span, reflect distinct stages in his artistic evolution, with little stylistic continuity between them. The First Symphony (1963), written after his studies at the Tallinn Conservatory, combines baroque-inspired forms with advanced harmonic language influenced by serialism. The Second Symphony (1966) continues this exploration, incorporating serial techniques alongside textures reminiscent of the Polish avant-garde. The Third Symphony (1971) marks a shift toward medieval and chant-inspired influences. His Fourth Symphony, Los Angeles (2007–08), draws on Orthodox liturgical models and sacred music traditions.

Eva Ollikainen (b. 1982, Espoo) is a Finnish conductor known for her expressive style, strong musical leadership, and commitment to contemporary repertoire. Trained at the Sibelius Academy under Leif Segerstam and Jorma Panula, she gained early recognition after winning the Jorma Panula Conducting Competition at age 21. Since 2020, she has served as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, following her tenure with the Nordic Chamber Orchestra. Active internationally, she appears regularly with major orchestras and opera houses across Europe, North America, and Asia. She is also dedicated to mentoring young musicians and promotes contemporary music, particularly through her collaboration with composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir.
