Lebensfries by Hafliði Hallgrímsson is a major contemporary work for string trio, performed by the Ssens Trio. Completed in 2022, it expands the earlier String Trio Op. 54 into a cycle of twelve interconnected movements. The title, drawn from Edvard Munch, reflects the work’s philosophical depth. Dedicated to Lars Hertervig, the piece is inspired by his evocative landscapes and tragic life, translating their dreamlike stillness and atmosphere into a rich and expressive musical language rather than direct visual depiction.

Hafliði Hallgrímsson (born 1941 in Akureyri) is an Icelandic composer and former cellist who previously served as principal cellist of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra before dedicating himself fully to composition in 1983. He later held the role of composer-in-residence with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2010. Trained in cello with Enrico Mainardi and composition with Peter Maxwell Davies, Hallgrímsson also performed on Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd. His violin concerto Poemi won the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1986.
