Sibelius' Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 39, composed between 1898 and 1899, is a four-movement orchestral work that marked an important step in the composer’s career. Premiered in 1899 in Helsinki under Sibelius’s direction, the original version was later revised, with the final version introduced in 1900 in Berlin by Robert Kajanus. The British premiere followed in 1903 under Henry Wood. The symphony is notable for its expressive orchestration, particularly its prominent use of string and woodwind solos, including an opening clarinet passage that recurs later, contributing to its thematic cohesion and dramatic character
