Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed Scheherazade, Op. 35 (1888) at his family estate near Luga, drawing inspiration from One Thousand and One Nights, particularly through Antoine Galland’s adaptation of Syrian manuscripts. Conceived as an atmospheric rather than strictly narrative work, the suite blends Eastern fantasy with rich symphonic color. Premiered in St. Petersburg under the composer’s direction, it features recurring motifs representing the Sultan and Scheherazade, unifying its four movements. The music unfolds as an evocative Oriental tableau, marked by vivid orchestration, lyrical expressiveness, and virtuosic writing for solo instruments, exemplifying Rimsky-Korsakov’s distinctive style.

Vladimir Fedoseyev (born 1932) is an internationally renowned conductor and longtime artistic director of the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as a permanent guest conductor in Zurich’s musical institutions. Over his distinguished career, he has received numerous honors, including Russia’s Order “For Services to the Motherland” and Austria’s Cross of Honour for Science and Art. Fedoseyev has conducted at major venues such as the Salzburg Festival and La Scala, leading works by composers like Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Alfred Schnittke. A graduate of leading Moscow institutions, he began his career in Leningrad, invited by Evgeny Mravinsky.
