This recording features two mid-17th-century Roman multi-choir masses—one for Easter and another based on a motet by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina for Pentecost—performed by I Fagiolini as part of their “Colossal Baroque” series. The project pays tribute to the largely lost works of Orazio Benevoli, who served at St Peter’s in Rome and was renowned for his mastery of spatial, multi-choir composition. These premiere recordings highlight the richness and grandeur of Benevoli’s style, offering a fresh perspective on 17th-century sacred music through performances of exceptional quality.

I Fagiolini is internationally acclaimed for its innovative and imaginative programming under the direction of Robert Hollingworth. Notable projects include The Full Monteverdi with John La Bouchardière, Tallis in Wonderland, and interdisciplinary collaborations such as How Like An Angel with C!RCA. Their 2017 celebration of Claudio Monteverdi featured acclaimed performances and recordings, including Monteverdi: The Other Vespers. The ensemble also explores connections between music and art, as in Leonardo: Shaping the Invisible, created with Martin Kemp, marking the anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci. Through diverse projects and recordings, they continue to redefine choral performance.
