Simon-Pierre Bestion creates an immersive reinterpretation of Renaissance Spain under Charles V, blending historical sources with imaginative reconstruction. His project evokes a cultural landscape shaped by Arab-Andalusian influences and the arrival of Flemish musicians in the Spanish court, whose Capilla flamenca significantly impacted Renaissance musical life. Bestion constructs an “imaginary Requiem” for Charles V using authentic works such as Pedro de Escobar’s Missa pro defunctis and Cristóbal de Morales’ Missa Mille regretz, based on the emperor’s favored song. Through his ensemble La Tempête, he enriches these works with expressive liberties, incorporating percussion, shawms, and sackbuts to evoke ceremonial and outdoor processional soundscapes.

Simon-Pierre Bestion (born 1988) is a French musician whose work spans organ performance, harpsichord, choral direction, and historically informed ensemble leadership. Trained at the Conservatoire de Nantes and later in Lyon, he studied organ with Michel Bourcier and expanded his keyboard expertise through work with leading early-music specialists. His artistic development was shaped by extensive training in choral conducting and vocal polyphony, as well as influences from prominent conductors and pedagogues in contemporary and early music. In 2007, he founded the ensemble Europa Barocca and the choir Luce del Canto, which later merged to form La Tempête in 2015, through which he continues to develop immersive, dramaturgical interpretations of early and sacred music.
