_____________________
Under the direction of David Bray, the Luminatus vocal ensemble presents a compelling program that juxtaposes Renaissance choral works with contemporary compositions by female composers. This third collection highlights both newly discovered and previously unrecorded repertoire, thoughtfully exploring sacred music from the sixteenth and twenty-first centuries. The recording features a madrigal that serves as the basis for a mass by Philippe de Monte, alongside lesser-known works of the same era. These are complemented by modern pieces from composers such as Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Cecilia McDowall, Melissa Dunphy, Rosa Elliott, and Kerry Andrew.
The Luminatus vocal ensemble is a small, flexible group of distinguished professional singers, praised for its “spellbinding” performances and exceptional musicality. Operating as “first amongst equals,” its members balance ensemble singing with solo contributions, producing a rich and resonant sound. The ensemble performs a wide-ranging repertoire, often collaborating with period instrument orchestras, and focuses particularly on newly discovered or edited Renaissance works. It has revived music by composers such as Tiburtio Massaino and Ippolito Baccusi, alongside pieces by Philippe de Monte and Francesco Guerrero, frequently pairing them with contemporary works by female composers to highlight connections across musical eras.
