Caroline Shaw and Andrew Yee have released Or, The Whale, a collaborative album on Platoon that combines original compositions with reimagined interpretations of existing works. Centered around their co-composed soundtrack for the 2022 silent film Moby Dick, or The Whale by Wu Tsang and Sophia Al Maria, the album explores themes of transformation, depth, and emotional resonance inspired by Moby-Dick. Alongside the soundtrack material, the record features several original works by Shaw and Yee, blending contemporary classical textures with intimate experimentation. The album concludes with a striking interpretation of Olivier Messiaen’s “Louange à l'Éternité de Jésus” from Quatuor pour la fin du Temps, performed with cello and vocal harmonizer, further emphasizing the duo’s expansive and deeply expressive musical language.
Caroline Shaw is an award-winning American composer, violinist, singer, and producer known for her innovative approach to contemporary classical music and cross-genre collaboration. A recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Music, multiple Grammy Awards, a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, and an honorary doctorate from Yale, Shaw has built a career that moves fluidly between composition, performance, and production. Her work spans collaborations with artists and ensembles including Rosalía, Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Nas, and Kanye West, as well as major orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. Shaw’s recent projects encompass film, television, dance, theatre, and live performance, reflecting her distinctive ability to merge experimental sound worlds with emotional immediacy and collaborative creativity.
