The program pairs works by Franz Schubert—notably the Piano Sonata in D major D 850—with Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen. Volodos emphasizes transparency, stillness, and flexibility of tempo in Schubert, advocating for a living, speech-like sense of musical time. In Schumann’s miniatures, he explores poetic simplicity and emotional depth, treating each piece as a concentrated expression of imagination and memory, unifying both works through a highly personal interpretative vision.

Arcadi Volodos, born in St Petersburg in 1972, is an internationally acclaimed pianist renowned for his deeply individual interpretative voice and highly selective recording output. After initial studies in singing and conducting, he turned to the piano in his late teens, training at the St Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories and later in Paris and Madrid. Since his New York debut in 1996, he has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic, under major conductors such as Valery Gergiev and Riccardo Chailly. Equally active as a recitalist, Volodos is especially noted for his interpretations of Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff, and for a carefully curated discography that has earned multiple international awards.
