Jānis Mediņš’s 24 Dainas is presented as a deeply personal piano cycle that reflects Latvian landscapes, folklore, and cultural identity. Spanning four decades of composition, the work forms a musical diary in which intimate dedications, lyrical reflections, and more expansive emotional statements are interwoven. The pieces evoke contrasting natural imagery, from the calm of pine forests to the intensity of the Baltic Sea, while maintaining a cohesive sense of narrative continuity. Rooted in national tradition yet expressed through a refined pianistic language, the cycle highlights Mediņš’s artistic sensitivity and enduring connection to Latvian heritage. This recording invites listeners into a contemplative sound world where memory, tradition, and personal expression converge.

Jānis Mediņš (1890–1966) was a central figure in Latvian classical music and one of its foundational composers. Born in Riga into a highly musical family, he studied multiple instruments from a young age and began his professional career as an orchestral musician in his teens. He later became a conductor at institutions including the Latvian National Opera and the Latvian Radio Orchestra, playing a key role in shaping Latvia’s early national music culture. Mediņš was a pioneering composer whose output of over 300 works includes the first Latvian piano concerto, ballet, and piano trio, as well as the opera Uguns un nakts, which helped define the national operatic tradition alongside contemporaries such as Alfrēds Kalniņš. His style blends late Romantic orchestration influenced by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner with Impressionist color and Latvian folk elements. Later in life, especially during exile in Sweden, his music became more introspective and chamber-oriented, yet remained deeply expressive and rooted in personal and national identity.

Arta Arnicane is an internationally active Latvian pianist known for her communicative performance style and ability to create immersive concert experiences. She has appeared at major venues including the Rudolfinum and the Tonhalle Zürich. Born into a musical family, she began piano studies and composition at an early age and later trained across Europe, graduating with distinction from institutions such as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Latvian Academy of Music, and the Zurich University of the Arts. Her artistic development was shaped by teachers including Norma Fisher and Homero Francesch. A prizewinner of competitions such as the Vianna da Motta, Premio Iturbi, and Prague Spring, she is particularly dedicated to thematic programming and rare repertoire, and performs actively as a chamber musician, including in duo collaborations.
