This album by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under conductor Nicholas Collon brings together two contrasting cosmic-inspired works: Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets and Väinö Raitio’s Moonlight on Jupiter. Holst’s well-known seven-movement suite, completed in 1916, reflects astrological concepts and is noted for its expansive orchestration and imaginative use of large orchestral forces. In contrast, Raitio’s 1920s tone poem—here receiving its first CD recording in decades—represents early Finnish modernism, influenced by impressionism and expressionism, and evokes visionary imagery of space and Jupiter’s moons. Together, the works create a dialogue between British early 20th-century orchestral grandeur and Finnish modernist experimentation, highlighting contrasting yet complementary approaches to cosmic inspiration.
Nicholas Collon (born 1983) is a British conductor widely recognized for his refined technique, intellectual approach, and innovative programming.
