This recording presents a fresh interpretation of the six organ trio sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, works often regarded as among the finest achievements of his output. Through their own transcription for recorder and harpsichord, Maud Caille and Fabien Armengaud offer a new perspective on these masterpieces, highlighting the expressive dialogue between the two instruments. Rooted in more than three decades of familiarity with the sonatas, their interpretation combines deep musical insight with personal reflection, transforming the recording into both a tribute to Bach and an evolving artistic conversation. The result is an intimate and imaginative exploration of works that have remained a lifelong source of inspiration for the performers.
Maud Caille is a distinguished specialist in early music, trained at the conservatories of Toulouse, Orsay, Amsterdam, Geneva, and Paris under renowned teachers including Walter van Hauwe, William Dongois, and Jean Tubéry. As a recorder and cornet player, she has performed extensively in France and internationally with leading ensembles such as Le Concert Spirituel, Les Talens Lyriques, Les Arts Florissants, and Concerto Italiano. In addition to her work in historical performance, she actively collaborates with contemporary composers, including Philippe Hersant and Nicolas Frize. A participant in numerous recordings and video productions, Caille also holds the Certificat d’Aptitude in Early Music and teaches at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Boulogne-Billancourt.
Fabien Armengaud developed an early connection to music through the organ lofts of Auch, where he was introduced to performance by his grandfather, organist Roland Couybes. He studied harpsichord and basso continuo with leading specialists including Jan Willem Jansen, Yasuko Bouvard, and Laurence Boulay, later refining his training with Michèle Dévérité and working with Hervé Niquet. He founded the Baroque ensemble Le Concert Calotin in 1999 and has since held prominent roles as conductor, continuo player, and musical director in major early music institutions, including the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. Armengaud has conducted opera productions in France and abroad and leads the Ensemble Sébastien de Brossard, with acclaimed recordings dedicated to French Baroque repertoire. His career combines performance, research, and leadership in historically informed music practice.
