Established by an act of Congress in 1798, the United States Marine Band is America's oldest professional musical organization and its premier military band. Now encompassing the Marine Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Ensembles, it operates independently from other Marine Corps musical units. Famously dubbed "The President's Own" by Thomas Jefferson in 1801, the band holds a historic relationship with the White House, having performed at every presidential inauguration since Jefferson's. Today, the ensemble performs at roughly 500 annual events—including state dinners, ceremonies, and parades—and continues its traditional national fall concert tour, which was initiated in 1891 by its renowned former director, John Philip Sousa.
