Composed during a triumphant period in the mid-1780s, these three symphonies represent Franz Joseph Haydn’s newfound creative and financial liberation from the Esterházy estate. Commissioned by a prominent new ensemble in Paris, the works showcase the composer's inexhaustible ingenuity. Despite surface structural similarities, each piece possesses a distinct character: Symphony No. 84 opens with an astonishingly colorful introduction; Symphony No. 85—a personal favorite of Queen Marie Antoinette—features rustic interludes in its trio; and Symphony No. 86 stands as the crowning achievement of the set, distinguished by an unequaled transitional passage from its slow introduction to the vibrant main section.

The Hungarian-born conductor Ádám Fischer (born 9 September 1949) is an internationally acclaimed maestro who graduated from Budapest's Liszt Academy before pursuing advanced studies in Vienna. Highly sought after across both operatic and symphonic repertoires, Fischer has collaborated with elite institutions globally, including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Since 1998, he has served as Chief Conductor of the Danish Chamber Orchestra, acting as a vital artistic catalyst. A highly decorated musician, Fischer's accolades include the prestigious Wolf Prize for Music, a BBC Music Magazine Award, and the International Classical Music Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
