When Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla studied with Nadia Boulanger in Fontainebleau during his early thirties, her guidance profoundly transformed his artistic direction. Rather than allowing him to abandon his heritage for traditional classical composition, Boulanger famously urged Piazzolla to elevate his tango roots. This project celebrates their extraordinary, magical exchange by weaving together their distinct musical worlds. It places Piazzolla’s Argentine influences, like Carlos Gardel and Alberto Ginastera, alongside Boulanger’s French lineage—including Gabriel Fauré, Lili Boulanger, and early music consort pieces—creating a unique, cross-cultural dialogue between classical repertoire and Piazzolla’s transformative Paris-era works.
Named after the mythical underworld river, the ensemble L'Achéron was founded in 2009 by François Joubert-Caillet to bridge the past and present. The group aims to make Renaissance and Baroque music accessible by exploring diverse period instruments and cross-genre collaborations, ranging from Ottoman music to electronic projects. Regularly performing at prestigious European festivals and venues, L'Achéron records for the Ricercar label. Their award-winning discography features acclaimed releases by Samuel Scheidt and Johann Bernhard Bach, alongside Joubert-Caillet’s ongoing, critically lauded monumental project to record the complete Pièces de Viole by Marin Marais, most recently issuing the Fourth Book.
