To celebrate its 25th anniversary and composer Wolfgang Puschnig’s 70th birthday, Quinton Classical has released "Das Kirchlein von Tauern," an extraordinary contemporary chamber opera. Composed for the 2023 Carinthian Summer festival, the work showcases Puschnig—traditionally recognized as an international jazz saxophonist—as a sensitive musical dramatist. Based on an ancient Carinthian legend with a libretto by Antonio Fian, the tragic story explores love, guilt, and atonement. Musically, the production blends traditional folk elements with modern wind harmonies, shifting between standard German and regional dialect. This premiere recording highlights the label's ongoing commitment to bridging cultural folklore with sophisticated, genre-defying contemporary compositions.
Wolfgang Puschnig (born 1956) is an acclaimed Austrian jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator who has been a prominent figure in the European music scene since the mid-1970s. Best known as a co-founder of the influential Vienna Art Orchestra, Puschnig has built a distinguished career bridging avant-garde jazz with diverse international traditions. His notable collaborations span from American jazz luminaries like Carla Bley to traditional Korean percussion ensembles. Additionally, his innovative "Alpine Aspects" project famously merged jazz with Austrian alpine music. A professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, his cultural contributions have earned him numerous prestigious awards.
