This recording spotlights Brescian composer Franco Margola’s effervescent creativity through previously unpublished music for solo and chamber guitar. Initially hesitant due to unfamiliarity with the instrument's tuning, Margola was inspired by his colleague Renzo Cabassi in 1967. The guitar subsequently became one of his favorite instruments, culminating in over 450 solo and chamber works documented in the De Carli catalogue. Highlighting these rare pieces, performers Mauro and Luciano Tortorelli, accompanied by violinist Ludovica del Bagno, deliver the world-premiere recording of these intimate compositions, building upon Margola's extensive musical legacy previously featured by the Tactus label.
Born in Orzinuovi, Italian composer Franco Margola (1908–1992) trained in violin and composition at the conservatories of Brescia and Parma. His early career was heavily influenced by Alfredo Casella, who championed Margola’s Trio in La internationally. A dedicated educator, Margola taught at major institutions in Milan, Rome, and Parma, and famously collaborated with a young Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Despite being deported to Mühldorf during World War II, he returned to produce a massive catalog of 814 works. His diverse output spans operas, symphonies, concertos, and extensive chamber music, with a particular late-career focus on guitar compositions.
